With social distancing in full effect, we all try to stay home as much as possible. And while spending time at home can be great, it is also challenging. Therefore, we want to share with you some tips on how to disconnect from your home office.
Many people have a hard time disconnecting after the routine of working from home. You may think that being at home is “unproductive” and would like to cover many additional activities. You can also feel overwhelmed and exhausted from spending all day in front of a screen.
Set your work hours.
As done in an office, you should follow a schedule that starts and ends your workday at home. Don’t log into the computer as soon as you wake up so you can start answering emails, and when it’s time to call it a day, log out completely.
Set clear goals.
Being productive does not mean overworking. What do you expect of yourself each day? Make sure to set realistic goals. Don’t be afraid to say, “this is too much,” just because you are working from home.
At the end of the day, make a to-do list for tomorrow.
Spend the last 30 minutes of your workday listing your tasks for the next day. This can prevent you from panicking over unfulfilled responsibilities while in front of your computer.
Turn your workplace into a home space.
That is, at the end of the day, log out of everything that has to do with work. If your kitchen table is your work desk, return it to its original function. If you have a home office, close that door when you finish your day, and thus, enter your home again.
Have a relaxation ritual.
When you work, your brain is on, but it is time to give it a break. Restore your attention span by listening to music, taking a shower, or helping out with dinner. Just be sure to choose something that helps distract you from busy work so that you have the relaxation time you need.
- Put aside your cell phone. It’s difficult, but try disabling notifications from email, calendar, etc. This is very healthy.
- Make a list, but not just to-do’s. Instead of making a list of the things you need to do, make a list of the things that spark happiness in your life or reasons you are grateful.
- Enjoy some time alone. Spending time focusing on yourself is good for your mood and your productivity. Whether it’s a walk alone or a long swim before the day begins. It’s important to take time with yourself every day.
- Give yourself relaxing rewards after completing tasks. For each completed task, give yourself 10 minutes in a “zen state.” Whether you spend it reading a good book in a comfortable chair, sipping a cup of tea in your robe and slippers, or practicing yoga while enjoying aromatherapy, make your rewards relaxing activities.
