How Overthinking Can Make You Miss Great Opportunities

Should I apply? “What if I’m not good enough?” Maybe I should give it a shot… maybe I shouldn’t. Chances are great that we’ve all been in a situation where overthinking took over. It’s natural to have doubts, to question something, and to fear that it might not work out. But should we trust the process and give it our all, or is walking away the answer? Let’s take a closer look at How Overthinking Can Make You Miss Great Opportunities.

The Trap of “What If”

Life, at times, can feel like a rollercoaster ride. One moment you celebrate victory, and the following day brings a taste of bitter defeat. The feeling of disappointment can so often lead to self-doubt. As a result, we begin to fear the opportunities that come our way. We don’t want to lose, we don’t want to make mistakes, and we don’t want to get disappointed. Before we know it, we fall into the trap of “what if.”

Maria from Mexico has had bad luck with her career choices. She has never worked with a company where she felt she belonged. Unfortunately, her team wasn’t very respectful, which led Maria to question her self-worth.

Eventually, she decided that it was time to look for something else. However, the fear of a different scene, a different company, and new faces constantly played in the back of her mind: “What if it’s worse?” Nonetheless, she explored remote opportunities and came across Job Duck. This could be the opportunity she’d been waiting for.

As she began the process, she stared at the application form for almost an hour. She constantly reviewed the questions, double-checked her grammar, and edited her resume. On paper, everything was in order, but she hadn’t clicked “Submit.” Thoughts of self-doubt continued to crawl through her mind:

  • “What if I don’t have enough experience?”
  • “What if I mess up the interview?”
  • “What if they never respond?”

These questions can lead to a spiral of hesitation. Although Maria has excellent experience as an executive assistant, anxiety took over, and doubts started speaking louder than her potential. Sadly, she walked away and never applied.

Have you ever felt like Maria? Have you ever missed out on something that could’ve been the missing piece in your puzzle?

Focus on What You Can Control

There are only certain things we can control in life. Would we prefer a smooth sail? Absolutely! However, that’s not always possible. Instead of worrying about external factors, let’s focus on our actions and what we can do to give ourselves the best shot at reaching our goals.

What should Maria have done? Firstly, instead of overthinking and focusing on her past experiences, it would’ve been best to research Job Duck. This way, Maria would’ve been able to decide if our company culture and the benefits we offer were something she had in mind.

To best prepare for the application process, Maria could’ve downloaded our resources, watched our Weekly Tea recordings, joined our live sessions, and reached out to the team regarding any questions. Most importantly, Maria should’ve taken action by trusting herself, given it a shot by submitting her application, and enjoyed the process (regardless of the outcome).

Action Beats Anxiety

The truth is, no amount of thinking will ever eliminate uncertainty. No one is ever 100% ready. It’s okay to have questions. It’s okay to feel uncertain. But we shouldn’t allow those thoughts to stop us from finishing what we’ve started. Doubts will always be there. What matters is what we do despite them.

Our most successful candidates are the ones who act even when they have doubts. They apply, they ask questions, and they trust the process (even if they’re nervous). Instead of wondering “What if it doesn’t work out?”, they ask “What if it does?” And then they show up. We’ve learned that progress doesn’t require perfection. It requires momentum.

You Never Know Unless You Try

As we already know, Maria has the necessary skills and experience to join our team as an executive assistant. If she had taken action, she would’ve worked from home, had more time for her family, worked in a healthy environment, and grown in her career.

It’s best to know that our application process is there to highlight your strengths and not to trap you into mistakes. Yes, it’s detailed. Yes, we look for people who care. But perfection isn’t the goal; potential is.

Ultimately, we will never know how something might turn out unless we try it. So, if you are interested in our career opportunities, go ahead and apply. And if you’re halfway through your application wondering whether to keep going, the answer is yes. Every completed step brings you closer to a career that works for your life.

A Final Thought

Even though Maria is a fictional character, isn’t it easy to relate to her story as we’ve all doubted ourselves? Was it the best decision to walk away? How far could she have come if she had more self-confidence? We can all learn a lesson from this read: don’t let doubts become dead ends. Try to avoid overthinking. Take the shot. Send the application. Trust yourself.

I do relate to Maria story, I’m always thinking I maybe not good enough, but I did take a chance, my downfall was taking a chance without being prepared. Now I am stuck on should I apply again? Or do you use my last application?
