Love at First Shift

Love at First Shift

We have all heard stories about love at first sight. It is that instant connection that gives you butterflies before you even understand why. While that is a great trope for movies, it is a pretty high bar for a Monday morning at a new job.

Most first days are full of “Wait, what is my password again?” and low-level anxiety while you try not to say something embarrassing during a meeting.

But every so often, a first day at a company brings that “this is it” feeling when you realize you’re going to enjoy showing up here. Because of that, we sat down with some Job Duck team members as they shared honest experiences that explain why they found “love at first shift.”

It’s hard to fall in love with a company you’ve just met.

But for Neo from South Africa, joining Job Duck was something she had never experienced before. She didn’t need much time to figure things out; she instantly knew she had found a place where she belonged:

“I have stepped into a very healthy working environment. The people in my department, as well as my boss, are the friendliest people ever. I even sent them a message on our chat forum and was like, ‘Is it normal for people to be so friendly toward one another?’

Your life is still allowed to exist, right?

It should. But does it? “Work-life balance” is an eye-catching phrase that spreads at the speed of Cupid’s arrow. However, it usually misses the mark when things get busy.

For our team, hitting the bullseye is what made them fall in love. Specifically, it’s being able to enjoy lunch breaks or after-hours without being disturbed or feeling guilty.

One teammate, Dominique from Mexico, shared: “I have time to go to the gym, play my favorite video games, and spend time with my girlfriend.”

When you find time to spend with those you love or on things that make you happy, we’re happy. At Job Duck, you’re not a “resource” filling a seat. You are a human being who deserves time away from work.

We have your back.

That’s one of the reasons why we’ve been certified as “Great Place to Work” for four consecutive years. Unfortunately, many of us show up at a new job facing a firehose of information, that “sink or swim” pressure, and the feeling that we are already behind.

When we spoke to the team about life at work, the word that came up again and again was “supportive.” Eduardo from Argentina shared that his experience working with Job Duck felt very different from what he had known before. He added:

“Teammates notice overload right away and step up to support you with the tasks at hand.”

We all deserve that kind of support. It gives us the motivation we need to turn our thought process from “I don’t think I’ll be able to finish the task” to “I know I will.”

The honeymoon phase never ended.

And why should it? It’s exciting to live on cloud nine! But for some, it’s more complicated. We have all had those jobs where everyone is on their best behavior for the first week, only for the masks to fall off by the second month.

When we caught up with the team months after their first day, the story had not changed. Nadine from South Africa put it simply: “I’m lucky to have a wonderful boss. She’s very open and friendly with me, so I have felt at home from the beginning.” There is no bait-and-switch here.

We are committed to your well-being.

After all, we’re in this together. We all have deadlines, busy seasons, and days when the to-do list feels miles long. The difference is that we do not measure commitment by how exhausted you are at the end of the day.

At Job Duck, commitment means your manager listens when you tell them you’re overloaded. You’ll feel the presence of a team that’s eager to step in when you want to log off and be present with your family.

Love at first sight.

We have all heard stories about love at first sight. Perhaps you have lived it and written a story of your own. But how many of us can say the same thing about work? Have you fallen in love, or are you feeling hopeless?

If the first week always feels like the highlight and everything goes downhill after that, Job Duck could prove the exception. Sometimes, we need to take a leap of faith because the ideal company will catch us when we fall.
